Interview of Prof Rajiva Wijesinghe by Matt Abud of Radio Australia – 8 July 2010

MA: Just before we get started, am I pronouncing your name correctly, Rajiva Wijesinha?

RW: It’s Rajiva.

MA: And how should I refer to you? I mean, you used to be I think the Secretary of SCOPP but what should I refer to you as now?

RW: Just an ordinary Member of the Parliament.

MA: And this is for the Liberal Party. Is that right?

RW: Yes. That’s part of the ruling Government allliance.

MA: Ok. So it’s part of the coalition?

RW: Yes.

MA: Ok. So may be just for some background first. There has been a lot of discussion around the Panel that Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon has set up to look at alleged war crimes or abuses in the last stages of the war. What’s the government’s response to that?

RW: Well, I don’t think it is supposed to be for looking at war crimes, according to Ban Ki-moon at least, as opposed to all the hype. It’s not to look into abuses, it is to advise him on the best way of proceeding with regard to what he claims is his interpretation of the agreement he signed with the President. I think, if you look at it very carefully, you see Ban Ki-moon is in a bit of a bind, because there’s a lot of pressure on him obviously to make some sort of statement about Sri Lanka. And on the whole he’s been quite good about this, about not letting himself be carried away, but with all this pressure mounting he had to find a way of doing this within the legalities of the UN Charter.

Julian Wilson from Australia emerged winner at The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) world tour ‘SriLankan Airlines Pro 2010’ riding the swell in the east coast of Sri Lanka at Arugam Bay. Wilson came into this event courtesy of a wild-card from the sponsor and throughout the event he dominated, continually posting the day’s highest scoring rides and took a deserved win over 19 year-old USA surfer Nat Young the runner up.

22 year old Wilson, a Queenslander, compared the waves at Arugam Bay to those at Noosa where he trained and said “The waves have been outstanding everyday and in many ways they are similar to the point waves around Noosa where I live – but probably way more consistent.” He went on to add “I can’t believe what an outstanding event this has been for me and all the surfers who have travelled here”. Arugam Bay was recently voted Asia’s top most surf destination by -Floating Asia.

Statement on the appointment of the Sri Lanka – Panel of Experts by the Secretary General of the United Nations PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 28 June 2010 13:55

The Government of Sri Lanka strongly opposes the appointment, by the Secretary General of the United Nations, of the Sri Lanka – Panel of Experts announced by his Spokesperson in New York on Tuesday, 22nd June 2010.

Sri Lanka was ravaged by the scourge of terrorism for over 30 years. The people of Sri Lanka have, during this period, suffered violence and terror of unimaginable proportions, unleashed on them by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the most ruthless terrorist organization in the world. After a long and difficult struggle the Government of Sri Lanka has successfully rid the country of terror, and is in the process of rebuilding the lives of her people. As an important part of this process His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka has appointed a Commission on “Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation” under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, a statutory regime available under Sri Lankan law. The Government is confident that the Commission would make a most significant contribution to the further strengthening of national amity, through a process of restorative justice.
