THE HIGH COMMISSION OF SRI LANKA IN CANBERRA CELEBRATES DEEPAVALI

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Canberra organised a vibrant event to celebrate Deepavali, the festival of lights on 22 November 2025. The event was held at the High Commission with the participation of the Sri Lankan community.

The High Commission was decorated with traditional “kolam” design, lights and other Deepavali festive decorations, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere.  The event honoured the cultural and spiritual significance of Deepavali whilst highlighting Sri Lanka’s commitment to unity, peace, and reconciliation.

 

The programme commenced with Hindu religious observances conducted by Swami Jai Shankar from  the Sri Vishnu Shiva Temple  in Mawson, invoking blessings on all those gathered.

 

Sri Lanka High Commissioner Yasoja Gunasekera, welcomed the gathering and highlighted Deepavali’s message of renewal and unity. In her remarks, the High Commissioner referred to the message of  H.E President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering a just, inclusive, and peaceful society where the well-being and dignity of all people are safeguarded. Thereafter Mr, Manivanan of the Sri Lankan community delivered a speech on the significance of Deepavali as well as the significance of light in all major religions practiced in Sri Lanka.

 

The event featured a vibrant array of cultural performances and music by members of the Sri Lankan community in Canberra, celebrating the richness and diversity of Sri Lanka’s heritage: A flute performance by Shivan Prasana and a violin performance by students of Mrs. Prathiba Nagabushan accompanied by miruthangam by Saravanan Kandasamy and dance performances by the students of Aksharah. The celebrations concluded with a reception, where invitees enjoyed Sri Lankan hospitality in an atmosphere of warmth and fellowship.
