Following the presentation, a discussion was held between President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and High Commissioner Gunasekera during which High Commissioner Gunasekera reaffirmed commitment to further strengthening the friendly relations and cooperation between Sri Lanka and Fiji and deepening engagement with the South Pacific region.
During her visit to Suva, High Commissioner Gunasekera had the opportunity to call on Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, Prime Minister of Fiji. Both sides expressed confidence that the longstanding friendship between the two nations will continue to grow in the years ahead through enhanced dialogue, economic cooperation and people-to-people connections.
High Commissioner Gunasekera also called on Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr Raijeli Taga. Their discussion focussed on enhancing bilateral relations, in particular economic engagement between Sri Lanka and Fiji.
Sri Lanka and Fiji have enjoyed friendly bilateral relations since 1972. The relationship is underpinned by shared membership in the United Nations; Commonwealth and Colombo Plan as well as mutual interests in South-South cooperation; climate change and sustainable development. Further, maritime resources play a central role in the economies of both countries.
A significant number of Sri Lankan expatriates work in Fiji. Many of them are professionals, holding high positions in the Government and private sector. Notably, a large number of Sri Lankans have served in the judiciary in Fiji for a long period of time due to the shared common law system. Sri Lankan companies have contributed to Fiji’s economic growth in particular in the Ports Sector and in sustainable agriculture.
