New Year Observance at the Sri Lanka High Commission in Canberra – 2026
January 1, 2026
The Sri Lanka High Commission in Canberra marked the dawn of the New Year 2026 this morning with a simple yet meaningful ceremony, reflecting national pride and unity.
The observance commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag of Sri Lanka, followed by the singing of the Sri Lanka National Anthem. The Oath of Public Service was then read, reaffirming the commitment of the staff to serve the nation with dedication, integrity, and professionalism.
Addressing the gathering, the Acting High Commissioner drew attention to the leadership and guidance of His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Hon. Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Hon. Arun Hemachandra, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. He noted that under their direction, Sri Lanka is moving forward with a clear vision and renewed hope.
The Acting High Commissioner emphasized that the concept of “A Thriving Nation and a Beautiful Life” not a slogan . It is a responsibility that belongs to all of us. As officers serving Sri Lanka, especially in a foreign mission, our work, our behaviour, and the way we treat one another should reflect this vision every day.
The Acting High Commissioner concluded that real progress comes when we work together with understanding and respect. Each person here has a role to play. When we support one another and work as one team, we can build a better working environment and contribute in our own way to a better country.
The occasion concluded with all officers and staff coming together to share traditional Sri Lankan food, symbolising harmony, togetherness, and the cultural values that unite Sri Lankans.
The Sri Lanka High Commission extends its best wishes for a peaceful, prosperous, and successful New Year to the Government and people of Sri Lanka, as well as to the Sri Lankan community in Australia.
