Punaruda Sri Lanka Australia, Extends Support for Disaster Relief Efforts in Sri Lanka

Punaruda Sri Lanka Australia, has extended its assistance for disaster relief efforts in Sri Lanka by contributing support valued at AUD 200,000. A token representing the contribution was formally presented to the Sri Lanka High Commission in Canberra on 31st December 2025.

The token was presented to Mr. Wishwanath Aponsu, Acting High Commissioner for Sri Lanka, by Mr Hemaka Wijayaratne, Director of Punaruda Sri Lanka Australia, together with members of the organisation and officials of the Sri Lanka High Commission. Punaruda Sri Lanka Australia is a registered charitable organisation in Australia.

In addition to the financial contribution, the organisation has arranged the dispatch of a 20-foot container of essential relief supplies to Sri Lanka. The consignment, procured in collaboration with Sydney-based partners and PIL Shipping Lines, has been dispatched to the Disaster Management Centre through the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence. The shipment includes clothing, stationery, and non-perishable items and is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka by 2nd  February 2026.

During the meeting, Mr Aponsu expressed his sincere appreciation to the members of the organisation for their valuable support to Sri Lanka and encouraged their continued engagement in initiatives aimed at promoting trade, tourism, education, and broader investment opportunities in the country. Punaruda Sri Lanka Australia expressed its willingness to support such initiatives in the future and conveyed its appreciation to the Sri Lanka High Commission for facilitating the engagement, following the leadership extended by the High Commission.

The organisation further outlined plans to undertake additional initiatives aimed at assisting the people of Sri Lanka, including through the engagement of Australians of Sri Lankan origin. The discussions were held in a positive and constructive manner, with Punaruda Sri Lanka Australia reaffirming its commitment to work in close coordination with the Sri Lanka High Commission.
